The OUTCOME

The Solution
Having researched national cultural icons and their long-term staying power as marks of national identity, it became clear that leveraging these pre-existing systems was the smartest way to capture the combined cultural elements of both nations while ensuring the design remained relevant for the future. I built the identity around each nation's national flower — the rose for England, thistle for Scotland, daffodil for Wales, flax for Northern Ireland, and the sunflower for Ukraine — arranged as a single bouquet, so the mark reads as one partnership rather than two flags side by side.
Though this fell within my current role directing creative strategy for a multi-disciplinary team at Number 10, I designed this identity personally, start to finish. The identity went on to see extensive real-world use in Kyiv — appearing on commemorative stamps and projected onto a monument that had once carried Soviet-era symbolism, a fitting stage for a mark built around renewal and shared cultural identity.
The Brief
When the UK and Ukraine signed their 100 Year Partnership, unveiled during the Prime Minister's diplomatic visit to Kyiv in 2025, I was commissioned to design the identity that would carry it. The brief demanded range most projects never have to consider: a single system fluent enough for diplomatic protocol and public-facing campaigns alike, deployable across digital communications, cultural events, and school-linking programmes in both nations — and built to still make sense in 2125, a full century from signing.
